Super Bowl 50 Grins and Groans

Marketing Thingy

SB50_logo

Well, the Super Bowl had its “golden” anniversary last night, and, by all accounts, the anniversary was about the ONLY golden thing of the evening.  The game was a bit of a mess, dominated by Denver’s defense, with a lot of fits, starts, sacks and turnovers.

But the advertising that showed up was a little dull, too.  Which is sad, because last year’s big game didn’t live up to 2014.  Alas, we’re on a downward trend.

A couple of notable items:

Scantily clad women were kindly asked to stay OUT of the advertising this year. Weird.

There were very few surprises, but the ones that were held back were certainly worth the wait.

A couple of newcomers likely won’t be back. They’ll be lucky if they’re in business.

It was basically the “Celebrity Bowl” of advertising this year. A few of the standouts (read more below) were Christopher Walken, Helen…

Does Hilary Clinton hire Hispanic staff to run her social media channels?

I found interesting to make a post about a tweet in Spanish sent out  by @Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Her tweet only speaks to Hispanics that she does not staff Hispanics to run her social media channels while reaching the #Hispanic community. Which not only tweeted one bizarre, google translation  context-less tweet but it was accompanied by an English video that only after 8 minutes she speaks about being a grandmother.
I’m sure @HillaryClinton would have had higher engagement if she tweeted a post that speaks directly to Hispanics inviting them to get to know her more.  She could even take the funny route of being the super “ABUELA” by becoming the president of USA.

What if then we reach the Hispanic community with a more emotional and relatable post…

Many of you are grandmothers like me, let me be your President in 2016!

Please then my fellow Hispanics, which tweet would resonate more with you?

iPhone 6: Design

The iPhone 6 opts for soft curves and seamless, chambered joins between the screen and the back, as opposed to the machined edges of the iPhone 5S. Barring some plastic detailing on the rear that adds to the design and which houses the antennas it’s all glass and metal.

Iphone 6 Design

Iphone 6 Design

It’s big, but not too big

While the iPhone 6 is bigger, it doesn’t feel too big. Aside from being much thinner and lighter at just 129g it’s very similar in size to the original HTC One, one of our favorite phones of last year. If you have small hands you might struggle to get to the top corners of the screen, but we had no such problems.

IPHONEOVERALL

There is some help if you do find the screen of the iPhone 6 too big. Clunky one-handed use features are available on some Android phones, but they’ve never felt particularly intuitive. They often just shrink the whole screen diagonally down. Apple has come up with a typically elegant solution. Tap twice on the home button and the entire top of the screen jumps down bringing all the hard to reach areas into your thumbs range. It works on every app that works in portrait mode too, so you can easily get to the address bar or a browser without a problem.

Realising a power button at the top of the phone of this size doesn’t work Apple has moved it. The power button is at the right edge, above the nano-SIM tray. This makes it easy to access with your thumb, if you’re right -anded or with your index finger if you’re a lefty. It works a lot better than the top power button on the HTC One M8 which requires a little juggling to get to if you’re not ET.

In all other respects the layout of the iPhone 6 is the same as previous versions. The slightly recessed volume buttons sit on the left just under the mute toggle. The 3.5mm headphone jack resides at the bottom, with the lightning port and six handsome holes for the speaker.

IPHONE5GRUESO

There’s only one area where the iPhone 6 deviates from the principles of smooth, seamless design and that’s with the rear camera. To ensure no compromise on image quality due to the slimness of the phone, Apple has had to raise the camera slightly from the body. But it isn’t anywhere near as severe as some other phones. Put a case on and you won’t notice this at all, but you will feel it when holding the phone in landscape. Helpfully, the edges are lightly chamfered, which means it slips into pockets without snagging at all.

iphonedlift

ll-in-all the iPhone 6 has an accomplished design. It doesn’t scream ‘look at me’, instead it’s refined, elegant and ergonomic, great for long hours of use, whether you’re gaming or visiting your favourite sites. Do we like it more than the HTC One M8’s design? The jury’s still deliberating; we have mixed views at the TrustedReviews’ offices.

There’s one final thing to talk about. The iPhone 6 is not water or dust resistant unlike the Galaxy S5 or Sony Xperia Z3. If that’s important for you then you’ll need to either opt for a waterproof case or go for one of the Android phones.

What is your favorite brand’s blog?

I analyzed the Macy’s Blog  It’s interesting to begin that the blog is not linked in anyway with MACYS website.  I personally think that is a mistake because I would think that the majority of users would search first for Macys website and then if more interested, they will search its blog.  Unless, the user tends to follow blogs related with fashion, accessories, home that would make sense for this person to follow Macys blog

The Blog has different categories such as Fashion, Men’s, Home, Accessories, Happenings, Weddings and Beauty. Each category contains several posts about this topic that will give a lifestyle tip for the user. Each post would contain a story behind that the person can feel related to and interested enough to click on the links and visit Macys. com to make the purchase.

The blog publishes each post every two or three days. The tone is informal and amiable. The content look and feel is without a doubt aesthetic. The content is easy to follow and not busy to read.

The home site would have the social media buttons and each posts will also have Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest share buttons. The Instagram widget is also integrate within the blog.

Social Media impact on Venezuelan Crisis

I have lived outside of my birth country for the past 7 years. The power of social media through social networks has allowed me to be in touch with my country. Having access to the videos, photos, testimonies, and dialogues in real time found on the social networks, has allowed me to witness the crisis unfolding in Venezuela. The current Venezuelan government has taken TV channels off the air, closed down radio stations, and censored or tightly controlled the newspapers. This severely restricts access of real-time information in Venezuela.

Latin American is one of the most active regions in social networks. It has 97.5% Social Media penetration in Internet users. Five of the ten most active countries are located in the Latin American region. Venezuela’s Internet penetration is 44% in which 31% own a smartphone. In terms of Twitter, Venezuela is the 4th country in the world with 14% of active users.

Top 10 countries with the highest penetration

Top 10 countries with the highest Twitter penetration as of October 2013*

February 12, 2014 was the ‘Day of the Youth’ in Venezuela. Crowds of students made up primarily of students took to the streets in more than 100 cities. The authoritarian regime has accelerated reforms aimed at centralization of power by censoring the media, jailing and torturing activists, restricting spending abroad, promoting polarization and violence and submerging Venezuela into a severe economic crisis.

In the communication gap left by the TV networks through censorship or self-censorship, social networking and the digital media have stepped up and filled this void. This can be seen in the marches, demonstrations, posters and other manifestations posted to the social media. This poster below is an example of this influence. The banner expresses, “I graduated in Communications: Major: Twitter.”

I graduated in Communications: Major: Twitter. #Venezuelafearless

I graduated in Communications, Major: Twitter. #Venezuelafearless

This banner reflects the power and the strength of social networks in Venezuela. People now go to marches with phones and cameras to immediately share what is happening on social networks.

This next photo shows how the national TV networks, Venevisión, RCTV, and Venezolana Televisión (logos respectively) are not transmitting the news of what is happening in Venezuela. Therefore, this news is being reported in Venezuela through social networks.

Venezuelan repression 2014

Venevisión: “Kneeling”, RCTV: “Closure”, Venezolana: “Biased.”

This phenomenon of using social medial to circulate uncensored information and to organize political movements has been used for many years as witnessed in the US when youth were encouraged to participate in the electoral process, to the Arab Spring in the Middle East, and to the events in Ukraine, Turkey and Spain today. Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and other media have not only played an important role, but have been essential tools for achieving objectives.

In the case of Venezuela, social networks are politicized and people of all ages are politically active and participate. It’s easy to promote slogan in which “You are the medium”. This means that you assume all the risk and you control the use of the medium. The government is very afraid of the power of this new technology, which offers citizens regardless of status or economic level, easy access to reach the masses and spread the word of what is happening in Venezuela. Censorship and attacks on the social media also occur.

One example was when on February 12th, Twitter confirmed that the government was blocking their site and not allowing users to have access to images. Another case of censorship occurred with Zello’, a free push-to-talk application for smartphones and PCs.  It was so serious that the company created another more powerful application for free use in Venezuela in support of no censorship and freedom of expression.

Zello App. It's been blocked in venezuela because of the repression.

Messages alerting users to not use Zello App as being intervened by the government.

This phenomenon is circulating throughout Venezuela and empowering its citizenry to denounce injustices and allowing activists to quickly report these incidents without going through social media filters. Social networks are taking over the transmission of marches, protests and activism, which has not been broadcasted on national television.

Notorious examples of these demonstrations can be cited in the following examples where images have been published immediately in social networks.A great example of the importance of social media was the arrest of Marvinia Gomez, and they were later identified and their profiles revealed on social media. Likewise,  people were asked to spread the word of anyone missing or taken to jail while protesting. Social media has allowed the sharing of this information before any other medium can making them viral and accessible when traditional media is being censored in Venezuela.

The weight of social networks has also been reflected in Venezuela in previous years, as it was during the crisis of the illness of the late President Chavez in which his status was made known only through the use of Twitter. This polarization between the government and the social networks has created a ‘Hashtag war’. This phenomenon has been used in election campaigns.Nowadays, Nicolas Maduro’s twitter feed is a frenetic mix of threats to his ‘fascist’ rivals to carry out the Chavez revolution and RT messages from sympathizers while Leopoldo Lopez, the leader of the opposition, uses it to stay informed on the marches and protesting and to encourage his supporters to fight nonviolently for their human rights.

On the other side, it’s also relevant to note that social media can generate disinformation that because of people having realized the power of the content released in social media it can be misused if the source is not verified. Sometimes this content can be used by external sources that fail to verify its content. In this example, this image was taken somewhere other than Venezuela.

Misinformation in social media

These actions also create awareness and initiative that can filter the information given in social networks. This is the case of some twitter users profiles who have become spokespersons providing information and status about detainees. Furthermore, other organized groups are seeking to bring the message beyond the social networks by inviting protesters to take posters to the streets and sharing their message when there is no Internet.  Example:  “LEE A VENEZUELA’.

There is also a movement called the ‘Echo Effect’ whose purpose is to echo what is happening in Venezuela by having celebrities and known personalities narrate the tortures and incidents that occur during the protests.

The Eco Effect is a digital motion that replicates the voices of the streets in Venezuela. Created by artists and journalists who promote freedom of expression, to spread complaining phrases and statements from students and people on the street who have suffered repression.

Furthermore, there is a more organized movement of people living outside of Venezuela and this is drawing international attention. A facebook page called “SOS Venezuela” with more than 160K likes, publishes information both in English and Spanish about Venezuelan news, and events organized across the globe. A big initiative was the use of “#SOSvenezuela” to show support for Venezuela, in which people from different countries would form the “SOS” to display their support and be internationally exposed to what’s happening in Venezuela.  The “SOS” was form in more than 150 cities and its images were published in many portals and its Facebook SOSVenezuela page gained through Facebook more than 100K views.

Another momentous example was the Oscars event, which aired on March 2, 2014. Venezuelans promoted the hashtag ‘OscarsForVenezuela’ and sent messages to nominees and presenters of the event seeking to promote the cause of the students and attract attention to the violations of human rights. Actors such as Kevin Spacey and Jared Leto expressed their support to Venezuela during the event.

Topsy, an analytic tool, revealed that #OscarsforVenezuela had more than 250M tweets and more than 6K mentions occurred when the images were published and went viral.

oscarsforvenezuela oscarsforvenezuela

Furthermore, Topsy, revealed that there have been more than 6M mentions to its hashtags since the Venezuela movement started. The most popular are, #SOSVenezuela +5M, #PrayforVenezuela +2.5M, #IamyourVoiceVenezuela +800K mentions.

Additionally, it’s relevant to mention that a Per survey of 22 developing countries found that Venezuelans were most likely to say they’d learned that someone’s political beliefs were different than they thought based on something the person posted on social media (49 percent of Venezuelan respondents said they shared views about politics on social media, compared to a median of 38 percent for the countries polled).

Venezuela is the first country in which 74% of social network users learn that someone political belief were different to the one they thought because of some info they posted on their profile (theatlantic.com).

This shows that the impact of social media in Venezuela’s politics is huge and that more than ever Venezuelans are using some form of social media.

Have you explored Location based Apps?

I moved to the city back in August 26th and even though I had contacted realtors to show me studios, I only had 10 days with my parents in the city to rent an apartment. I needed to take advantage of the short time with them as much as I could. My brother, whom also looked an apartment in Georgia for him to live recommended me this awesome application called PadMapper Apartment Search, where you can filter your apartment search based on your location, facilities preferences. I found it extremely useful since I can easily see the location points on the map and use advance search for preferences.  I can bookmark them and have them in a list separate.

I can easily read the apartment details within the application.  The application is also available in desktop where I can add my favorite places and it will be saved on the map.

Here below you can see all locations available within your radio search and filter your search based on  price range, number bedrooms and bathrooms, and keywords.

ImageInformation filter listing

Once you have filter your search, it will show you the apartments based on your preferences. You will be able to see pictures, brief description of the place and contact information. If you click  “Original Listing” it will take to the website within the App where the apartment is listed with extensive information. You can also contact the person and make the call without living the application. And make notes!

Once you select your favorite apartment options, location points become green for you to follow and have them listed in a separate site.

And the coolest thing!. it’s integrate with google maps, so you can follow directions from your location.

On the other side, I use my favorite app, YELP to search everything I need to know about places, its reviews, location, menu, etc. I have used it for the restaurant located in West Village, which they have a promotion that if you check in within the App, you will receive a free Dessert or Champagne Bottle!. You can also share it with FB and Twitter!.  I think it’s a great marketing initiative since the promotion will make somehow part of your decision in going to the place.  I  100% recommend this restaurant for you to check it out!. Great Brazilian Peruvian fusion flavor!

YELP App will allow you to search all kind of places you can think of such as restaurants, pharmacies, nails spa, etc. In particular for restaurants, you can see the menu, pictures of its dishes, choose for delivery or pick up, and read or make reviews. And if you are at a place where you are not sure to eat or find a good place for your nails, you just use “radio search” and will look for you all locations within your distance for you to check them out!

My mobile activity during the weekend…

It was interesting to track myself during the weekend and realized how you can become dependent on the many apps in your mobile. I will list those Apps in which I engaged with  during the weekend:
  •  I used my mobile to send a picture of the handsome David Beckham to a friend whom is very fanatic about him. I sent over the big banner on the store at H&M at 42st. This activity made me realize how easy is to deliver a visual message to someone who is in another country within thousand miles away from me.
IMG_0032
  •  As I want to make sure that I do not forget my portuguese skills, I have been using lately the Duolingo App, which is an interactive application to practice the language.  As you strengthen your language skills with vocabulary, word recognition, translation, you reach a higher level.
IMG_8204
  • I have won a scholarship to attend the upcoming Social Media Week conference in New York. After that, I downloaded their own App that would allow me to search events schedule, speakers, attendees. It’s an awesome application since it lets me connect with other SMW attendees in real-time in public or private. I can also search attendees based on my network, for example, I can contact and chat those people from NYU whom will attend. Furthermore, you can view attendees’ profiles and have the option to add them in LinkedIn or other social networks. Take a look at the screenshots below showing these features.
 IMG_8216 IMG_8217
  •  Some of the topics I searched on Chrome and Safari were:
  • Movies showtimes to decide which movie to watch in Regal Union Square cinemas.
  • The Conjugame website for me to review the conjugation of the Portuguese verbs (I’m really trying not to forget the language!)
  • Events and concerts in NY in Ticketmaster
  • Bars in NY to host the next Happy hour mixer for IMA students
  • I tend to share relevant tweets on my Facebook timeline.  The most recent tweets were about Jennifer Lawrence, a Mashable blog post and my news about the scholarship to SMW:

Screen Shot 2014-02-11 at 12.38.29 AM Screen Shot 2014-02-11 at 12.38.39 AM

  • I shared also with my Facebook and Linkedin friends, a TED talk call “Why 30 is not the new 20”. It was very interesting and 100% recommended for those in their 20s!
Part of my day….
Since I am not a cook expert, I proved my family that I was indeed cooking and making my own meals! Therefore, I shared with my family some dishes I cooked during the weekend (I know, it’s not a WAO menu but for me it’s a good start!!)

And that was my mobile activity during the weekend.. hope you enjoyed it!
